MUSIC EDUCATION IN HUNGARY - AN OVERVIEW

The various degree programmes at the Liszt Academy train music pedagogues for the full spectrum of pre-college music schools existing in Hungary. These are the following:

  • Basic level (Elementary school and elementary Kodály music school, lower-grade art-education schools)
  • Secondary level (Music conservatory, Gymnasium, Music Gymnasium)

Remarks:

In Hungary music education financed by the state is part of the general education system. Hungary has a music school law stating that each child has the right to develop his or her talent.

The elementary Kodály music school combines general education with music education. Daily music lessons are integrated into the general subjects. There are additional choir and in some schools instrumental lessons as well.

Most of lower-grade art-education schools are state sponsored, some are private. Pupils usually start in these schools at the age of 8 and study there till the age of 14. The curriculum is divided into two categories: A and B level. „A” level is meant for amateur studies, level „B” focuses on the training of future professionals.

Music conservatories provide general education combined with advanced studies in music at secondary level. This education is aimed at preparing students for the entrance examination at higher music education institutions. Most of music conservatory students continue their studies in higher music education.
